Sustainability Philosophy

We strive to tread lightly on the Earth.  Our choices reflect respect for the well-being of all people and our planet home.

 Our home features:

• Sustainably harvested  logs from our own property and reclaimed wood from the Oakridge area.
• Passive solar heating utilizing the thermal mass of natural stone and tile.
  
• Abundant natural lighting.
  
• High indoor air quality due to Zero VOC paints, Low VOC finishes on FSC certified woodwork, no carpeting.
• Formaldehyde-free  cabinets crafted locally from sustainably harvested American hardwood.
• Energy Star applicances and 100% compact flourescent light bulbs in all indoor and most outdoor fixtures.
• High efficiency heating system supplimented with wood heat from our wood stove, which burns wood from the property. All trees cut for firewood are part of the process of converting the on-site second growth forest to restore to mature forest characteristics.
• Super energy efficient insulation and sealant envelope that exceeds building codes.
• Interior space conservation, minimal interior walls for better air circulation, heat and light transfer.
• Designed and built by a National Sustainable Building Advisor, member of the Northwest Eco Building Guild and the Cascadia Region USGBC.

Our sustainable practices include:

• We reduce, reuse, and recycle whenever possible. 
  
• We  buy organic food in bulk, compost food waste, and produce very little garbage.
• We grow our own organic food.
• We use natural, bio-degradeable cleaning products.
• We ride bikes and use public transportation whenever possible.
  
• We drive bio-diesel vehicles.  SeQuential Biofuels, B99 and B20 as weather permits.
  
• We practice and believe strongly in the  principals of vegetarianism.
• We will soon be adding a solar water heating system.
• We buy  Green Power, wind and solar, renewable energy credits from our utility company, equal to our average monthly usage.
  

Who We Are

 Norman Coyer is a third generation carpenter.  He built the Double Diamond Lodge with his own bare hands (and some tools).  He is an avid lover of trails, board member of GOATS, the Greater Oakridge Area Trail Stewards, a mountain biker, telemark skiier, musician, fly-fisherman, sailor, and outdoor enthusiast.  He has lived in Oakridge for over 25 years, and has abundant knowledge of the local trails and wilderness.

 Erika Coyer is a trained Waldorf  Teacher, who loves  to  hike, garden, camp, sing, telemark ski, sail, and knit.  She has traveled in many foreign lands and lived in many places, but loves best her sweet mountain home on the shores of Hills Creek Lake, where she paddles her kayak , swims and hangs out on the dock with their three dogs. She is active in volunteering in the community to help make it a better place for visitors and residents.
